Why Los Altos PREPARE
Los Altos PREPARE was started by the Los Altos Community Foundation because a
group of citizens realized that the Los Altos community could do more to
be prepared for major emergencies and disasters. It has been
demonstrated throughout the US that a close collaboration between
Government and its citizens is essential to making communities
resilient, safe, strong and prepared to respond and recover from
disasters and emergencies.
We want to:CONNECT − We want to connect neighbors − in person. It has been demonstrated that it is the personal ties among community members that improve survival during a disaster and recovery in its aftermath. We need volunteers in Los Altos to be Block and Neighborhood coordinators. Tools and training will be provided, including "Neighborhood Watch".
EDUCATE − We will sponsor programs and events, create social media and write articles to enhance the knowledge of our community about steps to being prepared and responding to major disasters and emergencies. We need writers, videographers, techies, bloggers, speakers, innovators, educators
PREPARE − We will promote the Personal Emergency Preparedness (PEP) Classes offered through the Santa Clara County Fire Department in Los Altos and the PEP classes offered by Los Altos Hills County Fire District in Los Altos Hills. The first step in being prepared is knowing how to take care of yourself & your family. We strongly urge you to attend the class offered in your community and encourage your neighbors and friends to take this important step to ensure that your families will survive the aftermath of a major disaster.
Are you connected to your neighbors on nextdoor.com? If you are we are looking for volunteers to help us publicize Los Altos PREPARE activities and information to their neighborhood. Ideally content for the postings would be written and distributed to the volunteer for personalization and posting to their Nextdoor community. There are 29 neighborhoods in Los Altos, and in Los Altos Hills there are 39, which are primarily based on the fire district boundaries. If you would like to volunteer to post information about Los Altos PREPARE please send an email to email@example.com with your name and your nextdoor.com neighborhood.
COMMUNITY ACTION TEAM (CAT)An integral part of Los Altos PREPARE, a program of the Los Altos Community Foundation

The Los Altos Community Foundation (LACF) started Los Altos PREPARE in 2013 for the purpose of engaging residents, emergency response agencies and other stakeholders to ensure that we are prepared and can effectively respond to major disasters and emergencies. The CAT program has been created because other disasters in the US have shown that it is the personal ties among community members that improve survival during a disaster and recovery in its aftermath.
JOIN A PREPARE TEAMTo move forward with our goal of having a more prepared Los Altos community we need to establish some PREPARE Teams and engage the talents and resources of our community. We need volunteers to be leaders and members of the Teams. The leader of each Team would also serve as a member of the Los Altos PREPARE Steering Committee. A leader is someone who will make a commitment, establish goals, motivate team members, and have fun as we improve our community and make it an even better place to live.
Leadership for each of these Teams will be key to our success. If you would like more information about being a PREPARE Team leader please call Sherie at 650−888−2610 or send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org
